Client Brief and Requirements

Hofundur approached us for a complete reimagining of their existing office, transforming it into a well-planned workspace that could comfortably seat a 12-member team while supporting a smoother, more efficient daily workflow. Beyond functionality, the brief was clear: the space needed to look cohesive and premium, and most importantly, it had to represent Hofundur’s identity as a modular furniture manufacturer. The office was envisioned not just as a place to work, but as a brand environment, one that communicates their craftsmanship, attention to detail, and manufacturing strength the moment a client walks in.

Key Requirements about the project

  • Seating for 12 people with clear zoning

  • A layout built around workflow and daily use

  • A cohesive office aesthetic that shows brand strength

  • Better lighting and smarter storage integration

Existing Space Assessment

Before redesign, the office had a few challenges that were directly impacting function and brand perception:

  • No clear layout or zoning, making the space feel cluttered and inefficient

  • Brand essence wasn’t visible—the office didn’t communicate what Hofundur does best

  • Lack of lighting and storage, affecting day-to-day usability

Design Approach for This Project

We approached Hofundur’s Pune office interior design through the lens of Japandi philosophy (named the project Kanso meaning simplicity) clean lines, calm surfaces, warmth through natural materials, and purposeful detailing.

Space Planning and Zoning Decisions

The first priority was a practical plan:

  • Defined zones for workstations, meetings, leadership, and visitors

  • Smooth movement from reception → team area → cabins/meeting rooms

  • Balanced privacy (cabin + meeting rooms) with collaboration (workstations + lunch/meeting)

Style Direction – Japandi at Work

Japandi helped us create:

  • Minimal visual clutter

  • Calm, cohesive look

  • Warmth through natural materials (wood tones, textures)

  • A premium yet grounded workspace

Materials and Finishes as a Brand Statement

Instead of typical office-grade particle-board furniture, we intentionally used materials as a differentiator, so the workspace itself becomes a display of Hofundur’s manufacturing capability.

Materials & finishes used:

  • Birch ply

  • Beech wood

  • Multiple veneers

  •  White Ash wood

  • Textured lime paint

  • Bamboo elements

  • Paper + cloth + metal for custom lighting details

Lighting Plan

Lighting was treated as both function + mood:

  • Enhanced overall brightness to fix the “dim office” problem

  • Custom lighting features using mixed materials to align with the brand’s craft-forward identity

Storage and Efficiency

Storage was integrated thoughtfully so the office stays visually clean while supporting a busy team’s daily needs.

Design Execution – Space by Space

Reception cum Waiting Area

The reception experience was designed to feel premium and welcoming with clean lines, balanced materials, and a clear first impression of the brand’s strength.

Workstations (10 Seats)

The workstation zone was planned for:

  • Clear circulation and team movement

  • Efficient desk alignment and functional zoning

  • A calm, clutter-free visual rhythm consistent with Japandi

Director’s Cabin (Signature Detail)

The standout feature here is a purpose-designed cabinet/file chest created as an ode to carpentry.

  • Shutters feature carpentry tool motifs embossed and finished in PU paint

  • This detail subtly communicates Hofundur’s craft and manufacturing DNA without needing signage or loud branding.

Meeting Room

Designed to support focused discussions while still feeling like part of the same cohesive office language.

Meeting Room + Lunch Room

A dual-purpose space that balances:

  • Formal meetings

  • Daily lunch breaks …without visually feeling like “two different rooms.”

Japandi minimalism helped maintain a single calm identity.

Cost, Timeline, and Deliverables

The project was executed over a four and half-month timeline (June to Nov), with the client intentionally allowing adequate time since they owned the premises and wanted a cohesive, detail-driven outcome rather than a rushed makeover. The overall budget category for the project was ‘Luxury’. Our scope included space planning and zoning, the complete interior concept and detailed design development, a focused materials and finishes strategy, and guidance for custom furniture and signature detailing. We also developed the lighting concept, including direction for custom fixtures, and provided on-ground coordination to ensure the execution stayed aligned with the design intent and achieved the desired final look.

Challenges and How We Solved Them

One of the biggest challenges was the lack of clear zoning and workflow, so we restructured the layout into purposeful zones for visitors, the core team, leadership, and meetings, ensuring smoother circulation and better day-to-day efficiency. Another concern was that the office didn’t reflect Hofundur’s brand identity, so we translated their manufacturing strength into the space through a material-led design language: using woods, veneers, craft-driven motifs, and custom lighting details to communicate their expertise. Finally, the existing space suffered from inadequate lighting and insufficient storage, which we addressed with a layered lighting strategy and thoughtfully integrated storage solutions to keep the workspace bright, organised, and visually calm.
